Dear Friends and Colleagues
For me personally, and in my role as President and CEO of
Saint Luke’s Foundation, the past 14 years have been some of the most enriching, most fulfilling years of my life. I have had the privilege of working with and for a visionary, compassionate and courageous Saint Luke’s Foundation board of trustees; leading the most dedicated, diligent and fun staff in the universe; laying a strong foundation and charting a course for the future success of Saint Luke’s Foundation; nurturing my family to grow and succeed; helping my husband overcome a life threatening illness; coping with the changes that aging brings to people I love; becoming a Nana Neecie to Lona and Lewi;
and traveling the country by motorcycle!
I have learned so much through my experiences, my work and my relationships. But as Ecclesiastes 3:1 teaches us: “For everything there is a season,” and I feel in my heart of hearts that my season is upon me. Therefore, I plan to leave my position as President and CEO of Saint Luke’s Foundation on or about July 1, 2014, then take some time to explore the seasons, and learn what that means to me.
I am confident that Saint Luke’s Foundation will continue to do the most amazing work with the most remarkable team and dedicated board. Please be assured that I will work with the staff and board to ensure a smooth transition in leadership. Our Foundation has always strived for transparency in all that we do, and we will continue to provide information as this transition progresses. We look forward to sharing information with you moving forward, and learning together what it takes to build healthy people, strong communities and resilient families.
One thing I have learned in this role is the importance of philanthropic humility… recognizing that although we are in a position to support transformative work in our community, it is our grantees who “do the doing” that advances our mission. We who have the privilege of working in philanthropy should always remember to thank those on whose shoulders we stand, and those who have given us the gift of making this journey with us. And most importantly, this astonishing world has taught me to do my best to live life with an open heart.
And so I thank you for your support and friendship. I feel so grateful for where the last few years have taken me, and I look forward to new adventures ahead with my family and friends.
With humility, gratitude and friendship,
Denise San Antonio Zeman
President and CEO
