How Care Alliance's for-profit model works The primary mission of Care Alliance is to provide high-quality medical and dental care, patient advocacy and related services to homeless or low-income individuals and families. Their challenge has been that while demand for our services has continued to grow each year, the number of traditional funding sources available to us – as a nonprofit organization – has decreased.
Most, if not all nonprofit organizations face the same dilemma-declining philanthropic and governmental funding and rising demand for services. To address this issue, the Cleveland Foundation, in collaboration with Community Wealth Ventures, instituted and funded a program to facilitate selected nonprofits assessing what “for profit” business opportunities might be possible to generate revenues for the nonprofit partially to make up for the declining traditional funding. Care Alliance was one of the nonprofits selected by the Program.
According to Care Alliance, “we believe this venture represents a good strategic fit with our organization. It makes good business sense from a number of perspectives. First, the addition of Avenue Dental Services meets a need in the market. While there are several downtown dental providers, none offers the evening or weekend hours that are so important to busy downtown Clevelanders.”
Additionally, the addition of Avenue Dental Services leverages Care Alliance’s successful track record as a provider of quality healthcare service, as well as the investment in its $2.6 million facility, which includes state-of-the-art dental suites.
And finally, under the leadership of Dr. Grande – who not only has extensive experience in the industry, but also has deep roots in Cleveland – Care Alliance has chosen a solid professional who can make the for-profit practice a success.
