A Strong Neighborhood (formerly Strong Communities) Grantee HEAL will premier their feature film

Saint-Lukes-Foundation-HEALVideoThumb(12.10.13) Healthy Eating & Active Living – Buckeye, Larchmere & Woodland Hills (HEAL) has a film premiering tomorrow night that highlights the community’s citizen-led program that involves growing food, exercising, making art and building community in the neighborhoods.

Launched in 2011, HEAL was started by Vedette Gavin, Saint Luke’s Foundation community health fellow at the MetroHealth System. Designed to bring residents and stakeholders together to improve the community’s general wellness, the program comprises a number of classes and activities — from Zumba and walking to cooking and gardening.

Unlike similar programs, which offer classes but leave little behind once grant money dries up, HEAL provides residents with the tools and education needed to lead the programs themselves. In 18 months, the program has engaged more than 1,800 participants, planted more than 200 gardens, built a new gym space and created 40 free, volunteer- led exercise classes available each week.
