In November, we at the Saint Luke’s Foundation shared preliminary information on our plans to reposition our grantmaking process for the future. Now, we want to share more details about this work. We also want to highlight ways we believe our 2012 grantmaking process can strengthen our relationship with grantees and the community.
Utilizing the guiding principles of Rethink, Redesign, Reinvent*, our board of trustees and professional staff thoroughly analyzed our Foundation’s infrastructure, operations and mission during this past year, with a particular focus on identifying thematic areas where we’ve gained traction. We studied changing needs in communities our grantees serve, as well as broader economic, demographic and societal shifts in Greater Cleveland and beyond. We also evaluated our grantmaking policies and procedures as they relate to these changes.
Our goal: Apply lessons learned to our grantmaking process in ways that allow us to more greatly impact change on the issues we care deeply about while maximizing stability and support for organizations whose work advances our mission, our vision and our values.
Based on the results of our analysis, our board has approved a significant increase in the Foundation’s grantmaking allocation for 2012. Simply put, immediate and sizeable opportunities exist such that deep investments in organizations that can demonstrate effective outcomes in the near term will pay great dividends in the years to come.
In keeping with our mission and vision, our work continues to focus on developing and maintaining healthy communities. While we recognize that there are many things that contribute to creating a healthy community, one of the most significant changes to come out of our evaluation process is the establishment of three distinct program strategy areas: Urban Health and Well-Being, Urban Community Revitalization and Urban Families. Each program strategy area will be managed by a Senior Program Officer.
Within each of these program strategy areas, Saint Luke’s Foundation will continue to provide discretionary, operating support, and capital support grants, as well as program-related investments. Grants will also be made within each program strategy area for building organizational capacity in the areas of collaboration, communication, leadership development, outcomes and learning, and policy/advocacy.
The new spending policy and program strategy areas are designed to recognize that a disciplined and thoughtful approach to grantmaking is essential for achieving the kind of impact needed to:
> increase the community’s capacity to address the complex, changing needs of Greater Cleveland’s vulnerable populations, and > address the root causes of disparities in health and well-being, including those that support policy change and promote equity.
When the organizations we support successfully achieve impact, our mission and vision become reality.
